Colchester Zoo is open every day except Christmas Day, but the end of the day moves: closing time varies with the season, and the zoo may shut up to 30 minutes before the stated time depending on how busy it is. That matters, because several of the headline areas close before the rest of the grounds: Kingdom of the Wild, Elephant Kingdom, Dinosaur Realm and the Madagascar Express Road Train, along with a range of the catering. On a late start, head for those first and leave the other paths for the end of the afternoon.
Food is spread across many outlets. Penguini’s Restaurant, near the Kids’ Safari Play Area, serves breakfast, pizza, pasta, loaded chips and jacket potatoes, and has toilets and baby change inside. Penguini’s and some other outlets are card only, and food brought in from outside can’t be eaten in the outlet eating areas. Allergen information is on hand at every outlet, and staff can advise on allergen concerns.
