Bongil Bongil’s eucalypt forests are home to one of the largest koala populations in New South Wales. During school holidays, guided tours run in the park.
The Bongil picnic area makes an easy base with children. It is flat and step-free, and paved paths run from the carpark to the picnic tables and on to a lookout over Bonville Creek. Many of the tables stand under shelters, and the barbecues are free. The park suggests summer for exploring the creek by canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard, and autumn for the mountain bike tracks.
The trade-off is water: there is no drinking water at the picnic area, so bring enough for everyone. The picnic area is gated and locked overnight, and dogs and other pets are not allowed anywhere in the park.
