Because general admission is free, the Ashmolean can be a visit you shape around your children’s energy rather than one you have to get your money’s worth from. Special exhibitions are the exception: they are charged, and children aged 12-17 qualify for a discounted exhibition ticket on showing proof of eligibility. The museum has pushchair storage and baby-changing facilities, a café on the lower ground floor, and a Rooftop Restaurant serving lunch and afternoon tea. The one catch for families is timing: the Ashmolean Gallery Adventure, an interactive multimedia guide with games, quizzes, sounds and stories, is available daily only in the school holidays, and you can book it ahead or ask for a device when you arrive. Over the festive period the museum is usually closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
