Alerce Costero is a national park in southern Chile, founded in 2010. The best-known walk is the Sendero Alerce Milenario to the Abuelo Alerce Milenario, and because the surroundings are fragile, it is only done in small groups led by a park ranger at set times. That shapes the day: you plan around your reserved slot rather than turning up when it suits the kids. The park has marked trails and toilets, and pets are not allowed. The trade-off is getting there: all access roads require four-wheel drive year-round because of their poor condition, and the current route to the Mirador sector via Las Trancas also requires chains, with no end date given for that notice.
