Akershus Fortress is a castle and fortress complex in the middle of Oslo, founded around 1300 and protected as Norwegian cultural heritage. Today a visit centres on its two museums, the Armed Forces Museum and Norway’s Resistance Museum, each with its own ticket, a family ticket for each, and a combined ticket across the fortress. At weekends the Armed Forces Museum runs drop-in guided tours that are included in the entry price. Within the fortress there are restaurants as well as cultural venues, and toilets are at the Akershus Fortress Visitor Centre. Arriving is easiest on foot: the fortress is within walking distance of Stortinget metro, Nationaltheatret and Oslo Central Station, and taxis cannot be ordered into the grounds. The trade-off is the castle itself, which is closed until further notice, so the building that gives the fortress its name is one you see only from outside for now.
