Machu Picchu is an Inca citadel from around 1450, set at about 2,430 metres above sea level. Every visit is booked in advance on the official ticket site, tuboleto.cultura.pe, for a date, a circuit and an entry time between 06:00 and 15:00. You enter at your slot, not later, and stay about two and a half hours; the site closes at 17:30.
Children aged 3 to 17 pay a reduced price and under-3s go free, though everyone, children included, needs a passport or ID. Foreign adults pay around S/163 for the standard route. With children, Circuit 2 or 3-B are the routes to choose; the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain climbs are steep and often limited to children 12 and over.
Strollers are not allowed, only a soft carrier without a metal frame. Toilets are only outside the entrance and there is no re-entry, so go before you start. Food is not allowed inside, but water in a reusable bottle is. Everything is outdoors and the weather changes fast, so pack rain jackets, sun cream and hats, and allow time to adjust to the altitude. Getting there means a train to Aguas Calientes and the bus up to the site.
