OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

Cooks’ Cottage is a historic house museum: a cottage dating from 1755 and listed by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). Families visiting on their own simply turn up, as bookings are only needed for school visits and tour groups. The one catch: the guided tours are run only for booked groups on weekdays, so a family visiting alone will see the cottage self-guided. For a break afterwards, the KereKere Green café sits next to the Fitzroy Gardens Visitor Centre, opposite the cottage, and you can pre-order a picnic there. In the surrounding Fitzroy Gardens, the children’s playground has a giraffe swing, a dragon slide and a shaded sandpit. From the city centre it’s a walk along Flinders Street from Flinders Street Station or Federation Square, or a short tram ride east.

Why kids will love it

It’s a house from 1755 that children can step inside, which makes history something they can see rather than read about, and there’s a café right opposite and a playground in the gardens for afterwards.
