Neuschwanstein was founded in 1869 for Ludwig II of Bavaria, in a Romanesque Revival style, and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inside can only be seen on a guided tour that starts at a fixed time, and tickets left over on the day are sold at the Ticket Center in Hohenschwangau, only for that day and only while they last.
The climb is part of the visit. From the shuttle bus stop at Mary’s Bridge it is a steep walk down to the entrance, and a horse carriage runs up to a stop below the castle. Use the restroom and lockers at the courtyard entrance before the tour starts.
The trade-off for small children is the tour itself: it covers many narrow, winding stairs and a long walk through the castle, while prams, child carriers and rucksacks must stay outside. Expect to carry younger children in your arms.
