Hohenwerfen is a castle, fortress and museum whose origins go back to 1075. A visit combines the castle tour, with the bell tower and the interior rooms, the daily flight demonstrations by birds of prey and the Austrian Falconry Museum. Children receive their own audio guide at the start of the tour, and in the Castle Times exhibition a magic mirror has two castle mice, Bärbel and Jacki, lead young visitors through the story.
On weekends, weather permitting, there is a children’s knights’ tournament. This year a children’s party is planned for 25 October, and a romantic Advent market follows from late November. The castle closes for winter.
You can walk up from Werfen station on a shady footpath or take the inclined lift to the top. The trade-off for families with small children: the guided tour area cannot be entered with a stroller or a wheelchair. Meals are at the castle tavern, in the courtyard in fine weather or in the Knights’ Hall when it rains.
