Teide National Park was founded in 1954 and is listed as a World Heritage Site. It is a large protected area with visitor points spread across it rather than a single entrance. At El Portillo, a visitor centre sits beside a botanical garden laid out along a path, part of which is adapted for people with reduced mobility; the garden gate stays open around the clock as long as you close it behind you. The Juan Évora Ethnographic Museum has its own car park. As a general rule, the park’s visitor centres open every day except 1 and 6 January and Christmas Day whenever they are operating. Some trails and reserve zones inside the park require authorisation before you walk them.

Why kids will love it

The botanical garden at El Portillo gives children a short walk through the park’s plants, with part of the path adapted for reduced mobility, and it never closes. The trade-off is timing: the car park at the Juan Évora museum shuts in mid-afternoon, so a long walk starting there has to finish early.
