Castel Nuovo is a castle in central Naples, founded in 1282 to a design by Pierre d’Angicourt and listed as Italian national heritage. Today it holds the Museo Civico and an archaeological route laid out in the former Armoury Hall, and under-18s go in free, which keeps a family visit cheap.
You can arrive without a car: the metro stops at Municipio, and the Funicolare Centrale and city buses also serve the castle.
The trade-off is that the building is also a working civic venue. Rooms can be closed when they are rented out or used for official business, and entry is paused when the castle reaches capacity, counting guests at any event running at the same time. During maintenance the archaeological route may be shut and the Museo Civico lift out of use, so with a pushchair or a child who tires on stairs, ask staff at the entrance what is open that day.
