Elk Island is open daily all year, and for most families the day centres on the Astotin Lake Area: the playground sits in the heart of it, and the beach is for sand play, watching shore birds and dip netting for aquatic bugs. Picnic shelters there and at Tawayik Lake give cover when the weather turns. Beyond the lake, the park offers paid programs such as Bison Backstage and Snowshoe and Stargaze, and rents out snowshoes. The Astotin Theatre Interpretive Centre is closed until late May 2027. The trade-off is timing: summer days can be lively, and weekdays, early spring or late fall are calmer, but some services and facilities only open in the summer season.
