The Alcázar of Segovia is a castle whose origins go back to around 1200, built and rebuilt in Gothic, Mudéjar and Herrerian styles, and today part of a World Heritage Site. A visit is split into the Palace, the Artillery Museum and the Tower of Juan II, and the ticket you pick decides which of them you see and whether a guide comes along.
The tower is the trade-off. It is reached by a long spiral staircase, the castle advises against it for anyone with reduced mobility or health problems, and children may not go up without an adult. Tower tickets also tend to sell out, so decide before you book. The Palace and the Artillery Museum, by contrast, are reached by ramps, and wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge at access control.
There is no parking inside the Alcázar and very few spaces nearby, so the train from Madrid is the simpler way in. Every toilet on site has a baby-changing table.
