Iwatayama Monkey Park, founded in 1957, sits on the mountain above Arashiyama, a short walk from the Hankyu, Randen and JR stations. The monkeys set the schedule: the park may close early when they go back up the mountain, and it also shuts in heavy rain, heavy snow or typhoons.
The climb leads to the summit rest house, which is the only place where you may feed the monkeys, and you cannot bring your own feed. Photographing them is fine, as long as you keep a good distance.
The trade-off is the facilities: there are toilets only at the entrance and at the summit rest house, nothing in between, so plan a stop before you start the climb with small children. Bring cash, too; cards and e-money are not accepted.
