Lake Balaton is a rift lake in Hungary, protected as a Ramsar and Natura 2000 site. In summer the beaches take centre stage: the water is shallow and warms quickly, and the shorelines are well kept, which is why the official tourism board points families with toddlers here. The lake is easy to reach by train from Budapest, and a car ferry links the northern and southern shores across the narrow point at Tihany. The trade-off is the weather: storm warning lights around the lake can restrict swimming to near the shore or stop it entirely, so a beach day can end early. Rescue boats are stationed near the beaches. Cards are widely accepted, but small beach stalls may want cash in forints.
