For children, the highlight is the Scenic circuit, a rainforest walk where kids love walking through a huge strangler fig. The Barker Creek circuit is a second rainforest walk. Back at Dandabah, outdoor displays cover the park’s wildlife, landforms and history. King parrots and crimson rosellas are almost certain to turn up, and red-necked wallabies feed on the grassy areas.
Dandabah, Westcott and Burtons Well all have picnic areas with toilets and tables. The barbecues at Dandabah are electric and free to use. At Burtons Well and Westcott they burn wood, so bring your own clean milled timber.
The trade-off is the mountain weather, which can change quickly, so pack warm layers and raincoats even for a day trip. If you plan to camp, Dandabah is especially popular in the school holidays, and permits must be booked before you arrive because rangers can’t issue them on site.
