The Presidio is a former military base, now an urban park and a National Historic Landmark. It is a spread of destinations rather than one site, and a free shuttle route links places around the park.
The family activities centre on Presidio Tunnel Tops: a huge nature playground, hidden objects to hunt for, and birds and fish to spot. The Mess Hall there covers lunch, and the Picnic Place tables and grills can be reserved in advance; tables that are not reserved are first come, first served. The Presidio Visitor Center has maps and interactive exhibits, restrooms are nearby, and park rangers give talks.
The trade-off is the car: parking at lots near the Visitor Center and elsewhere in the park is paid by the hour or the day, unless you display a disabled person placard, while the shuttle from downtown costs nothing.
