Museum Meiji-mura is an open-air history and architecture museum, open since 1965, with its exhibits set among historic buildings on natural, hilly ground. The draw for families is that the past is something you can use: old-fashioned games such as a shooting gallery and archery keep children and adults busy, and you can rent Meiji-style dresses or a yagasuri kimono with hakama and walk the village in costume. The Kyoto City tram runs daily, while the real Meiji-era steam locomotive runs only on selected days. Eating is not allowed inside the historic buildings other than the food outlets. The trade-off is the ground itself: slopes are steep and steps appear all over the site, so it is not fully barrier-free. Strollers can be rented at the main gate or north gate entrance windows, though numbers are limited, as are the free manual wheelchairs lent at the same windows.
