OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

Start at the visitor centre and keep the first outing short. Canyon picnic area, not far from the centre, is fully accessible and has barbecues and tables, and the Whitegum lookout walk is easy enough for children and wheelchair accessible. Toilets are at set sites rather than everywhere: Canyon picnic area and campgrounds including Camp Blackman, Camp Wambelong, Camp Pincham and Balor Hut.

The park is listed as an International Dark Sky Park and on the Australian National Heritage List.

The thing to plan around: the park can close in poor weather or when there is fire danger, so a day out here is never fully fixed until you know the conditions.

Why kids will love it

Kids aged 5 to 12 can join junior ranger programs here on set dates, including the Explorer series, where weekly Saturday sessions have them investigating everything from geology to bush navigation.
