The Ipiranga Museum (Museu Paulista) is a history museum in São Paulo, founded in 1895. The gardens around it can be visited for free without a ticket, so the day can be split between the building and the grounds. The collection isn’t only for looking at: there are touch screens, three-dimensional models, 3D reproductions, replicas made in materials similar to the originals, and olfactory devices. At weekends, guided tours come with an entrance ticket, but you have to pick up a token for the tour at the museum.
Entry is free on Wednesdays and the first Sunday of the month, and that comes with a catch. On those days free tickets are handed out only at the ticket office on the day, while they last, and long queues are common, so bring sunscreen and hats for the wait. On paid days the museum sells a daily quota of tickets on site, but it can sell out when demand is high.
Pack light. Large bags and backpacks, food and bottles with liquids aren’t allowed inside, and the cloakroom is free. Conventional strollers and baby carriers are allowed in, but tricycles and children’s bikes are not. The building has elevators and access ramps.
