White Sands is a US national park of open dunes and sits on UNESCO’s tentative World Heritage list. The simplest way into the sand is the Interdune Boardwalk, a solid surface through the dunes that is wheelchair and stroller accessible; that access is stated for the boardwalk, not for the park as a whole. The park opens at 7:00 am every day, but its closing time changes through the year. Plan the day around what you carry. The White Sands Trading Post sells water and a limited range of food, and beyond the visitor center there is no water at all, so bring your own food and plenty to drink. That is the trade-off here: the dunes reward a long wander, but the park advises against hiking when it gets hot, and out on the sand you are on your own supplies.
