Jigokudani Monkey Park has been open to the public since 1964, and the approach shapes the whole visit. The trade-off is the terrain: every route in has unpaved ground, steps, slopes and changes in level, and wheelchairs and carts cannot be used on any of them.
There is no food or drink for sale at the park. Anything you bring has to go into a locker, and visitors are asked not to eat or drink outdoors, even outside the park’s own facilities.
Drivers can use a free car park reserved for park visitors at Kanbayashi Onsen, where the walk along the Yudo promenade begins.
