Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is a nonprofit zoo founded in 1894, and a daily ticket gets you into the Scott Aquarium and all the other habitats without extra entry fees. Rides are another matter: the Skyfari, the Wild Explorer, the train and the giant-screen films are each paid separately, so decide before you arrive which ones the kids get.
The zoo is open year-round except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and parking is free on a first-come, first-served basis. You are allowed to bring your own food and drinks, and there are restaurants and snack stands on the grounds, including Durham TreeTops Restaurant next to the Lied Jungle.
One thing to plan around: the Berniece Grewcock Butterfly and Insect Pavilion closes earlier than the zoo’s other buildings, so visit it early rather than saving it for the end of the day.
