The Shin-Yokohama Raumen Museum is a food museum built around ramen, and the eating is the visit. Every ramen shop offers a mini ramen, so a family can share the day across several shops instead of committing to one. Food and drink from outside cannot be brought in, and payment is cashless almost everywhere, the exceptions being the car park, the fortune-telling, the old-style candy shop and the vending machines.
It works well with a buggy: there are lifts inside, and you can take the stroller right into the ramen shops. Because the whole visit is indoors and kept at a comfortable temperature, coats can go in the coin lockers by the ground-floor lift or on the basement landing of the main stairs. Waiting times for each shop are shown on the museum’s website and mobile site, which helps when deciding where to queue.
The trade-off is the crowds. Seats cannot be reserved, and at busy times, especially Golden Week and Obon, the museum may restrict entry, so a holiday visit can mean waiting to get in and waiting again at the counter.
