OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

The Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus der Schweiz) has been open in Lucerne since 1959 and is listed as a class A Swiss cultural property of national significance. There are two ways in. The Museum ticket covers the exhibition and the Hans Erni Museum; the Day Pass adds the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, Media World, and the daytime films in the Filmtheater and daytime shows in the Planetarium. With a Day Pass you don’t need to reserve seats for those daytime shows and films, and you can go into any of them. The planetarium’s children’s shows are playful introductions to the solar system built around animated cartoons.

The trade-off is where you eat. Food and drink aren’t allowed in the exhibition halls, so picnics go to the designated outdoor areas or, in bad weather, to an old restaurant railway carriage where you can eat in the dry. The Mercato, Brasserie, Cafébar and Filmtheater Bistro can all be used without a ticket.

From Lucerne station it’s a short train or bus ride, or a walk along the lake promenade. Drivers will find parking along Lidostrasse and opposite the Lido beach.

Why kids will love it

With a Day Pass, the museum becomes a day of different formats for children: a ride through the Swiss Chocolate Adventure, cartoon-led planetarium shows about the solar system, and daytime films you can walk into without booking a seat. Each planetarium show lists its own recommended age.
