Larnach Castle was founded in 1874 to a design by the architect Robert Lawson, in the Gothic Revival style, and is listed by Heritage New Zealand as a Category 1 historic place. A Castle and Gardens entry covers more than the house itself: the tower, the gardens and grounds, the historic stables and outbuildings, the gift shop and the Ballroom Cafe, plus a brochure in several languages so you can find your own way round. The cafe’s cabinet food (sandwiches, scones, cakes and slices) makes an easy break between the rooms and the garden.
The trade-off is inside the building. The gardens, grounds and cafe are accessible to all visitors, but the Castle includes several stairways, and the turret steps up the tower are concrete, narrow and relatively steep, with a handrail. If that doesn’t suit everyone in your group, the short garden tour follows accessible pathways the whole way round.
