The Réserve Africaine de Sigean is a zoo founded in 1974, a day trip from Perpignan, and it splits into two parts: a car safari you drive through and a walking park. In every season the car safari closes before the walking park does, so the natural order is to drive first and walk afterwards.
In the car, the park asks you to keep an eye on the children and not let them open the doors or the sunroof, or lower the windows. On foot, the paths are paved with gentle slopes and lead past the Grande Volière aviary, the Vivarium and a dwarf-goat enclosure. The MATOBO playground sits right by the giraffe snack bar for the youngest, under their parents’ eye. For an extra fee you can do the safari in a park minibus with your own guide instead of your car.
The catch is that any exit is final: leave the park and you can’t come back in on the same ticket. That makes the picnic areas inside, a few steps from the animals, the practical answer if you’ve brought your own lunch.
