Capitol Reef National Park was founded in 1937 and holds International Dark Sky Park status. In Fruita, the park’s 19 historic orchards open for fruit picking during harvest season. It’s paid, on top of the entrance fee, and the rules and prices differ from orchard to orchard.
If you arrive on foot or by bike rather than by car, everyone aged 16 and over needs their own entrance pass. US fourth graders can get a free 4th Grade Pass.
The trade-off is exposure: there’s little vegetation to give shade and summers are hot, which is why the park asks every visitor to carry their own water for the day rather than count on finding it along the way.
