OUR FAMILY ASSESSMENT

Family Intelligence

Movie Park Germany was founded in 1996 and is built as a set of film and television backlots: a Santa Monica boardwalk with a big wheel and a playground, SpongeBob’s Bikini Bottom, the PAW Patrol area Adventure Bay, a fairy world for Cosmo and Wanda, and a Wild West corner holding Germany’s first wooden roller coaster. The mix is unusually flat at the young end – a cluster of rides with low or no minimum height sits together, so a three-year-old is not simply waiting while older siblings ride. The one thing to plan around is the calendar: from October the park turns itself over to a Halloween event, which changes the tone considerably for younger children. Food is spread across express counters, snack bars and cafés, and card payment is the only option at some of them.

Why kids will love it

The characters here are the ones small children already watch at home, and they get rides with their names on rather than a poster in a shop window. Older children get the coasters and a free-fall tower at the other end of the park. In between there is a Ninja Turtles driving school where a child practises at the wheel and leaves with a personalised licence – bookable in advance, and the kind of thing that gets talked about on the drive home.
