Luna Park opened at St Kilda in 1912 and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, which is roughly the experience on offer: an old park by the beach, reached by tram, not a resort you drive into. Light home-prepared food is welcome inside, sandwiches, fruit and simple meals made before you arrive, while commercially prepared food, takeaway, deliveries, glass containers and large picnic setups are not. Loose items are not allowed on the rides and can only be left near the ride area at your own risk, so a hired locker or an adult who sits one out becomes part of the arrangement. Capacity is restricted and the number of tickets is limited, which is why booking ahead does more than save time at the gate. The trade-off is the calendar: the park runs on school holiday days, weekends and public holidays, and closes on Christmas Day, so an ordinary term-time weekday may not be an option at all.
