Bondi Beach is patrolled by professional lifeguards seven days a week. Each day they check the water and set out red and yellow flags to mark where to swim, so the safe stretch can move from one day to the next. If you need help, the main lifeguard tower in the middle of the beach is staffed year-round, with extra towers at the northern and southern ends in summer.
Families tend to head for the northern end, where the children’s wading pool and rock pool sit, and North Bondi also has a large playground. Bondi Pavilion is the practical base, with dining, toilets, showers, change rooms and lockers, and free barbecue stations in the park run until dusk.
The promenade gives level access along the whole beach, with a ramp down to the sand at the northern end. Beach mats are rolled out on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, weather and surf permitting, and the council keeps one adult and one child beach wheelchair in lockers on the northern promenade; booking is essential and the hire cost is not stated. Dogs are not allowed on the beach.
The trade-off is getting there by car: street parking is scarce and metered, and the council points visitors to public transport instead.
