Central Park

Central Park covers the middle of Manhattan with no single main entrance, so a family day here depends less on getting in than on choosing a corner: arrive on one side, stay within a short walk, and leave the rest for another visit.

Booking
Helmets
Children under 14 must wear a helmet to cycle in the park, and it is recommended for every cyclist regardless of age.
Closed areas
A red flag on a lawn or ballfield means that area is closed to the public, either for rest after wet weather or for scheduled maintenance.
Food
The restaurant venues in the park are Tavern on the Green and the Central Park Boathouse.
Parking
There is no parking in Central Park itself, though there are parking garages nearby.
Getting there
Central Park is reachable by public transport, with many subway lines and bus stops serving it.
Quiet Zones
Named areas including Sheep Meadow, Strawberry Fields and the Conservatory Garden are designated Quiet Zones, where speakers, musical instruments and other noise are prohibited.

Central Park was founded in 1856 and laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and it is large enough that the side you arrive on decides most of your day. There is no centre to work outwards from, so the useful plan is a narrow one: one entrance, one lawn or ball field, one place to eat, and short distances between them.

Two things are worth knowing before you settle in. Dogs may be off leash from 6am to 9am and again from 9pm to 1am, which makes a sunrise walk a different experience from a midday one, though in named areas including The Ramble, Strawberry Fields and the Conservatory Garden dogs stay leashed around the clock. Restrooms are spread across the park and free to use, with one exception: the restroom at the Central Park Zoo requires a purchase to get in.

The trade-off is that parts of the park close without the park closing. Ball fields shut for the season every winter, and those closures apply to individual areas rather than to the park as a whole, so the field you built an afternoon around can be out of use while everything beside it stays open.

Why kids will love it

For children the appeal is space rather than a route. The lawns and ball fields are the activity, somewhere to run and kick rather than something to look at, and because they are scattered across the park there is usually one within a short walk of wherever you came in. Kids old enough to hold a phone can take over the navigating with the park’s free multilingual digital guide, which carries self-guided audio tours and family activities, although the activities are not broken down by age.

Tips & tricks

Enter near 65th Street for the Carousel and Central Park Zoo cluster, which keeps walking distances short with a stroller. Bring cash — the Carousel is cash only ($4/ride as of 2026). There’s very little shelter from rain or summer sun, so this is a fair-weather stop, not a backup plan for a wet day.
